Camille Pissarro would not feel out of place in the upper section of Pontoise, which has preserved its appearance of old, with the winding streets of the compact town centre spread across the sloping ground around St Maclou cathedral. The two squares forming an esplanade in front of it are a reminder of the town's medieval layout.
