The Benedictine monks arrived on the island in the 12C, building this gem of Italian Romanesque architecture and the stone-vaulted church. The distinctive Romanesque motifs are best appreciated from the outside, past the cloisters. The interior has a cross plan with lovely rosette paving, a stone dome and finely carved balustrades. As you walk round the island, don't miss the miniature votive chapels and their rustic commemorative plaques (crosses of dead wood and grass).
