This 58m-high bell tower is the symbol of the city of Pisa. Although its famous tilt has granted it globally renowned status, the sheer beauty of its architecture should not be overlooked. The very essence of Pisan Romanesque, its six storeys of galleries seem to unfurl in a weightless spiral. Construction began in 1173 under Bonanno Pisano; a century later Giovanni Simone was the first to attempt to resolve its slant in order to complete the project.
