This fortress, only a few ruins of which remain, owes its name to Pope Paul III who had it built around 1540. The impressive walls once surrounded part of the old medieval town. To get to the Rocca, visitors can also use the escalator (scala mobile) which connects Piazza Partigiani (below the upper town) to Piazza Italia. The latter is home to the Palazzo della Provincia (1870) and the Carducci gardens, from where you can enjoy superb views of the Tiber valley.
