Getting to Batur's main crater is easy enough, provided you take the right equipment and clothing, and the climb is not attempted alone in the dark (even though selecting a guide can be tiresome, given their tenacious pestering...). Sunrise is the best time, when the sky is clear and the view stretches to the island of Lombok in the distance... Heartier visitors will continue on to the lunar landscape of its secondary craters and the volcano dating from only 1997 and still very much active.
