Mazarine Library, set in the main courtyard of the Collège de France, stands on the site of the Nesle tower, destroyed in 1665. The first public library in France, it was initially opened to scholars by Mazarin, hence its name. The library boasts nearly 5,000 manuscripts and thousands of "mazarinades", as the pamphlets published during the revolt against the cardinal were known.
