When it was created in the 8C, this street became the busiest and most prosperous in Paris; it was also the "most nobly outfitted" when French kings paraded here on their processions to Reims for their coronation or to the basilica of St Denis for their burial. St-Leu-St-Gilles Church (n°92), built in 1235, was remodelled over the centuries, notably in the 19C by Baltard, to allow the creation of the Boulevard de Sébastopol.
