The Benedictine Ossiach Abbey, founded in the 11C, enjoyed good times before being secularised in 1783, then partly demolished. Today, its restored buildings contain a hotel, and host an internationally known music festival. The Romanesque church was given a Baroque makeover with magnificent soft-tone stuccowork and a vault painted by Josef Ferdinand Fromiller. The baptistry boasts one of the most precious Gothic carved altarpieces in Carinthia.
