The important collection of art in the national gallery is presented in a unique way, with works painted in different styles and in different periods displayed together. For example, one room juxtaposes a monochrome painting by Arne Malmedal with Munch's Enchanted Forest; in another, a landscape by Johan Christian Dahl sits alongside Cézanne's very different view of the Jas de Bouffan. Other rooms present the evolution of Norwegian painting, in particular the National Romanticism movement of the 19C. The museum's highlight is one of Edvard Munch's versions of The Scream.
