On the same promontory as the Castle of Mola, the Shrine of Santa Maria Magdalena was built between 1918 and 1946 by architect José Sala Sala. Trained in Barcelona, he was clearly influenced by Gaudi's Sagrada Familia. The trapezoidal plan recalls the shape of the vessel containing the oils used by Mary Magdalene to anoint Christ. This striking building is constructed using small stones and pebbles, with red-brick and Valencian polychrome earthenware embellishments.
