At a height of 452m/1,482ft, Mount Takuhi dominates Nishino-shima Island. At the summit, nestled between rock and greenery, is a shrine dedicated to the divinity of sailors who has kept watch here for one thousand years. Every passing ship blows its foghorn to thank the deity for keeping the sailors safe at sea. This wooden building, the oldest in the archipelago, is depicted in etchings by Hokusai and Hiroshige. Through fog and dense forest, the trail reveals glimpses of the sea and the surrounding islands.
