This tiny medieval city stands on an island at the heart of one of the many harbours and sheltered lagoons along the Zadar coast. Nin's fortune came from salt production, the traditional methods of which are still used. Saltwater is first pumped to fill the basins, then the salt is left to crystallise. It is harvested manually using wide toothless rakes. The salt is then dried in small piles alongside the basins. The lagoon's microalgae ensure a high proportion of minerals and trace elements.
