The Roman amphitheatre at Nimes is the best preserved of the Roman Empire, measuring 133m by 101m and able to accommodate 24 000 spectators. Its exterior presents an attic storey above two levels of 60 arcades each (21m). Transformed into a fortress by the Visigoths, and then into a village which still counted 700 inhabitants in the 18C, the structure was cleared and restored to its original purpose (as a venue for bullfights) in 1809. Two multimedia displays provide explanations on gladiators and bullfighting.
