Founded in 782 by the priest Shodo Shonin, Futarasan-jinja shrine was rebuilt in 1610. It has a very fine Momoyama-style Hon-den (central pavilion - 1619). Dedicated to Okuninushi no Mikoto, one of the divine founders of Shinto, the shrine also venerates the divine spirits of the surrounding mountains. You will also see 3 000-year-old black pines and an old bronze lantern slashed by sabres, known as the Ghost Lantern. A procession of flower-decked floats makes its way through the shrine complex every year in mid-April.
