The castle where King John died (1216) and King Charles gave up his struggle was raised by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln. It was besieged during the Civil War; the keep overlooking the Trent has not survived but there are traces of the 12C gateway, the 13C west wall and the central and northwest towers.
