South of the Lower East Side, this beautiful blue-grey-painted metal bridge connects Lower Manhattan to the upscale DUMBO neighbourhood in Brooklyn. Inaugurated in 1912, Manhattan Bridge is the fourth of the bridges over the East River after the Brooklyn Bridge, with its stockier towers, the Williamsburg Bridge and the Queensboro Bridge (1909). For a great view of the bridge, which was restored in 2008, walk along Washington Street on the Brooklyn side.
