Wall Street owes its name to a wooden fence designed to protect the Dutch city. It was knocked down by the English in 1699 and replaced by a street that came to symbolize American capitalism, even though the 1987 crisis and the attacks of 2001 have triggered an exodus of businesses to Midtown and New Jersey.
