Nara's historical district, Naramachi, comprises time-worn wooden houses known as machiya. These modest residences built by merchants in the 18C and 19C (some are still inhabited by their descendants) have been turned into cafes and craft shops. Two have been transformed into a museum, giving an insight into their interior architecture and the way of life of their occupants.
