At first glance, the Japan Alps look a lot like their European counterpart; they too have hosted the Winter Olympics (Nagano, 1998) and offer a comparable range of activities, from downhill skiing and walking to whitewater sports. But they also boast typically Japanese treasures. Don't miss out on a trip to Zenko-ji, one of the most remarkable temples in the country, nor the magnificent wooden Matsumoto castle, nor the Nozawa Onsen hot baths. It is definitely worth planning to spend several days here.
