Set on rapids beside the Prairies River, Sault-au-Récollet is one of the oldest communities of Montreal Island, annexed to the city in 1916. The toponym refers to the recollet and his faithful disciple Ahuntsic who were drowned by the Hurons in the rapids in 1625. In 1696, Sulpicians founded a mission here, which became a parish in 1736. The town is best known for its Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
