Aoshima-jinja is a shrine dedicated to the divinities Hikohohodemi-no-mikoto and Toyotamahime. It is located in a unique natural site: a magnificent forest of palm trees and other hundred-year-old trees situated on a small island with a 1.5km circumference. Formed by erosion some 10 or 15 000 years ago, the island is surrounded by astonishing columns of basalt rock. Those interested in Shinto mythology can visit the small museum adjoining the shrine.
