Although built at an altitude of 1 000m on the slopes of Mount Agung, the 1963 eruption miraculously spared Bali's most sacred temple. Visitors should try to see one of the numerous ceremonies that take place here all year long. Among this complex of 23 temples, three stand out, dedicated to the Hindu trinity, and of these, Penatarang Agung (Shiva), rising over six levels up the hill, is the most important and interesting.
