This avenue, laid out in the 17C, has become Marseilles' most iconic street. Vincent Scotto's operettas and the popular singers of the Interwar Period also contributed to its fame, but by the late 20C the Canebiere had somewhat missed the boat of progress and even become one of the city's least savoury areas. Since the 2000s, however, major works have rehabilitated the district and the streets around the opera house are now the site of some of the city's trendiest venues.
