Joseph Bonaparte dreamed up the idea of a vast square with a vista over the Royal Palace. And so he had over 50 houses, two convents, a church and other buildings demolished in order to make space for this semi-circular plaza, the most elegant in Madrid. In the centre of the gardens, which are dotted with stone statues from the palace, is a magnificent equestrian statue of Philip IV by Pietro Tacca (17C).
