This Romanesque church was built in the 12C on the site of an earlier basilica built in the 6C by St Frediano, Bishop of Lucca, who was said to have performed the miracle of damning the waters of the River Serchio. The church illustrates numerous stories from the Bible: the font is carved with the Crossing of the Red Sea, the frescoes in Sant'Agostino chapel illustrate the arrival of the Volto Santo in Lucca, while the large Byzantine-style mosaic depicts the Ascension.
