Before the construction of the Embankment in 1874 Cheyne Walk had a delightful frontage directly onto the River Thames. Now set well back from the river, it remains evocative of the Georgian era thanks to its row of pink brick houses. George Eliot spent her last days at n°4, while Rossetti lived at n°16 (Queen's House). Between n°19 and n°26, a palace of Henry VIII once stood.
