This cradle of Afro-Caribbean culture in the city has become very fashionable following its gentrification over the past decade. A symbol of the district's revival is the creation of its own currency, the Brixton Pound, in 2009, specially introduced to encourage local trade and to revive the local economy. Brixton remains synonymous with the music scene for Londoners and is home to one of the capital's legendary venues, the Brixton Academy.
