The Berkeley woods are still remembered, thanks to the plane trees planted in 1789. Some 18C houses survive on the west side, with wrought-iron balconies, lantern holders and candlesnuffers. The façade of No. 52 looks onto Charles Street, while No. 50 is occupied by Maggs, a bookshop specialising in old works. No. 47 was rebuilt in 1891 and Nos. 46 and 45, where Robert Clive, governor of India, lived, have balconies with balusters on the first floor.
