A landmark building overlooking the Slovenian capital, this medieval castle was built at the top of a hill, where a Roman fortified camp was located. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1511 and then rebuilt, it was, until the early 17C, the seat of regional power and then a prison. The current castle, apart from its Gothic chapel (1489), is to a large extent a late reconstruction, but commands a vast panoramic view over the city and the surrounding mountains from its crenellated tower.
