Below São Jorge Castle, on the northern flank, lies the small popular district of La Mouraria, with its narrow streets. This is where the defeated Moors were allowed to settle outside the walls in 1147. Much less touristy than Alfama, it has retained its authenticity, with its fado bars, grocery stores and mixed population. A major rehabilitation programme has been launched to revitalise this deprived area.
