Intrepid visitors can take in the docks' characteristic ambience by taking a walk between Belém and the praça do Comércio. The authorities have been systematically converting the waterfront into a leisure area, and it is now a pleasure to stroll along the River Tagus, nicknamed the "Straw Sea" (on account of the golden hue it takes on at dusk).
