Belém (Bethlehem) was the home port of the Portuguese ships that, from the 15C, set out in search of lands to conquer. The masterpieces of the Hieronymites Monastery and the Belém Tower, matrix of Manueline art, mark the apogee of Portuguese history. But this district is also firmly anchored in the 21C, thanks to the CCB, a vast cultural centre dedicated to contemporary art, and the MAAT, an avant-garde space inaugurated in 2016.
