The museum is partly housed the 17C palace of the counts of Alvor, to the south of the Lapa neighbourhood. The collections of paintings, sculptures and decorative arts from the 12C to the early 19C are closely tied in with the history of Portugal: Portuguese artists, European painters who lived or spent time in Portugal, objects from the Portuguese colonies. Note the Temptation of St Anthony by Jérôme Bosch, the portraits of the Twelve Apostles, the Japanese screens, and of course the Adoration of St Vincent by Nuno Gonçalves.
