From Lefkada, the road follows the lagoon, then the coast looks towards the mainland. Nydri is the island's main resort, its bay ringed by islets covered by cypress and olive trees. Beyond Vlycho bay (plunging sea views) are the villages of Poros, laid out on an olive-planted hillside, and Sivota, in a bay reminiscent of Norway's fjords. From Vassiliki, the second tourist hotspot, take a boat to Cape Lefkada, where 6C BC poetess Sappho supposedly killed herself. The west coast has white cliffs and wide beaches, like at Porto Katsiki.
