In olden days, this gate (the name derives from the French bûcheron or woodcutter), provided direct access to the Concise forest. It dates back to the 14C and is flanked by two round towers with machicolations. In 1844, the son of a tinsmith, Henri Rousseau, was born inside the tower to the right. He became better known later in life as the painter Le Douanier (the toll collector).
