A Unesco World Heritage Site, Kamigamo-jinja Temple, the oldest shrine of Kyoto, contains some thirty edifices and occupies 163 acres in the vicinity of the sacred mountain of Ko-yama. This natural protection endows the site with great purity. Built in 1863 for the seventh time, the main building retains the original structure dating from the Heian period, an artistic golden age, which has since been copied by the majority of shrines.
