Eikan-do, a Buddhist temple of the Jodo sect, attracts great crowds on account of its statue, Mikaeri Amida Nyorai, Buddha "looking over his shoulder" and its remarkable silk painting depicting the deity emerging from the mountains. A pagoda a little higher up affords a panoramic view over Kyoto. This religious complex is named after the priest Eikan (1033-1111), in tribute to his compassion for the sick and disabled.
