Chion-in Temple, near the mausoleum of Honen, founder of Jodo-shu, to which the temple belongs, was built in the 13C and extended in the 17C. Visitors enter through the immense main gate (San-mon), into the Miedo, an enormous edifice whose central statue is supposed to be a self-portrait of Honen, and into the Amida-do, the room of the Buddha Amida worshipped by the Jodo-shu. Chion-in has two guest houses adorned with Kano paintings and a delightful garden by Kobori Enshu.
