The Merovingian crypts in Jouarre
De Groene Gids
De beoordeling van de Michelin Gids
The Crypte St Paul and Crypte St Ébrégésile stand behind Jouarre's church. Formerly subterranean, they were joined up in the 17C, and have capitals and Merovingian tombs. The first crypt (7C) is one of France's oldest religious monuments. It houses the beautiful tomb of St Agilbert, bishop of Paris, and his sister St Telchilde's more elaborately decorated one. The second, a small Romanesque church, is where the sarcophagus of Bishop Ébrégésile is kept.
