It was here, in 1886, along the "main street" of a tented camp that Johannesburg was born. Keen to pay homage to its past, the city has created an open-air museum dedicated to the heroic period of mining prospection through exhibits that include a reconstructed headgear lift tower, mining carts and a stamp press.
