Clinging to the southern tip of Bali by a narrow isthmus, Bukit was in all probability an island before becoming a peninsula: its landscape, an undulating limestone plateau with dry vegetation, denotes the terraced and damp terrain of paddy fields. A few seaside resorts are beginning to prove popular with tourists, but most visitors come to see Uluwatu Temple, which overlooks the ocean, soak up the peaceful fishing village atmosphere of Jimbaran, or admire the surfers' antics.
