Inuyama Castle (16C) stands on a small hill, from where it commands a panoramic view of the Kiso River. Its 19m-high keep has miraculously survived the ravages of history, and offers a first-rate example of Momoyama-period architecture, with its roof on four levels and curved, upturned edges. The castle stands in a Japanese garden, Uraku-en, which is a good place to start your tour. There is also a teahouse, Jo-an (17C), which is remarkable for its very simplicity.
