The archaeological monument of Willkawain, a funeral mausoleum dating from the Huari period (c. 9000), is comprised of three platforms and thick ramparts. Each level has seven rooms covered with huge schist slabs, linked together by narrow passageways. Each of the funeral rooms formerly held mummies whose conservation was ensured thanks to an ingenious ventilation system. According to legend, a stone statue of the deity Viracocha stood at the top of this temple-mausoleum.
