Houat's position at the entrance to Quiberon Bay meant the island (5km by 1.3km) was very coveted by the English in the 17C and 18C. From the port where the fishing fleet is sheltered, a short climb takes you to the village. Whitewashed houses line the winding streets and alleys and a small belvedere offers a very fine view of the port and the Rhuys Peninsula. Incidentally, Houat is the Breton word for "duck".
