The oldest of the Anglican churches of the Far East, St John's Cathedral was consecrated in 1847 and now appears tiny, surrounded by towering high-rise buildings. However, the cathedral is a good example of the colonial architecture of Hong Kong, with its cream façade and harmonious proportions. Note the ceiling in the shape of a ship's hull, from which large fans have been hung to keep the congregation cool. Near the choir, stained-glass windows illustrate scenes from the Bible, as well as life in the former colony.
