Dong Khoi passes through the old colonial quarter to link the Saigon river with Notre-Dame cathedral. A focus of activity over the centuries, the avenue had an elegant feel under French rule, and a more down-to-earth appearance during the Vietnam War, attracting hordes of American soldiers. Nowadays it is lined by boutiques, art galleries and the outdoor terraces of bars and restaurants. This incredibly lively street remains popular with tourists and ex-pats alike.
