Ie-jima, a picturesque 23km2 island in the northwest of the peninsula, is ideal for exploring by bike. The north is lined with rocky cliffs, the south has a pretty beach, and inland are crops such as sugar cane, pineapple and tobacco (as well as an American training camp). At the centre of the island, Gusuku-yama, a 72m-high hillock, offers a splendid viewpoint that takes in the whole island. In the north, at the end of April, more than a million lilies open all at once.
