This palace was built in the early 15C by the first Duke of Bragança, Afonso Henriques, the natural son of King João I. The strong Burgundian influence is particularly noticeable, especially the roofs and the unusual 39 tall brick chimneys. This was one of the Iberian peninsula's most sumptuous residences, but the court moved to Vila Viçosa in the 16C, so from that time onwards it was only occupied for short periods.
