The capital of the Mughal empire is now no more than a ghost town. The houses have disappeared, but some magnificent red sandstone Mughal- and Rajput-style palaces remain: the Panch Mahal, with its 176 columns; the Palace of Jodha Bai, embellished with jharokha (balconies); and the Palace of the Turkish Sultana, flanked by a veranda. In addition to the two Diwan (audience halls), note the house of Birbal, adorned with incredibly intricate arabesques and interlacing.
