The museum is housed on the ground-floor of the Palais de la Régence, a Gothic-Renaissance (1533-47) edifice, whose vaulting bears the coats of arms of various Alsace towns. The collection includes the famous meteorite that fell on the town in 1492, as well as archaeological finds dating from the Neolithic and the Gallo-Roman eras.
